Four Star 3 Weeks Review

Here's a review I got recently. For a full round-up of my Edinburgh experiences - see here

Owen Niblock: Twisted Whimsy - Free
PBH's Free Fringe
I don't think I've ever come across anyone quite so talented at being geeky as Owen Niblock; he's the master of all geekdom. One man, several instruments (including a three string guitar that's almost as weedy as him) and a head littered with strangeness. Much of his material is based upon self-deprecation, generally relating to his non-alpha male stature or love of science and computers, yet underneath this, there is a self-confidence that shines through; pride in his own geeky powers, perhaps. He is incredibly funny. He tells short sharp jokes (in G major), makes up queer little ditties and draws pictures about a worm's dietary habits; it's like a mind map into the uncharted territory of Owen's warped brain.
The White Horse, 2 - 23 Aug (not 11, 18), 5.45pm (6.35pm), free, fpp 84.

Niblock vs Gig-A-Tron

MAD DOGS (VENUE 368)

IN THE third venue of its run, this was the most surreal show I've witnessed at the Fringe so far. After moving to Mad Dogs, geek stand-up Owen Niblock was again displaced, to the café upstairs, to make way for one-hit wonders Stiltskin. This could prove a problem for any show, but for one incorporating the world's first computerised comic, it created an atmosphere of impending catastrophe that Niblock did commendably well to contain. Sidestepping waitresses and diners, this computer programmer presented Gig-A-Tron 5000, an AI programme that can independently select jokes and field heckles. Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle need not fear, but the computer displayed enough promise to suggest she might dominate Niblock's next Fringe outing and become rather more than a gimmick on the circuit.

Regardless, the young comic has plenty more to entertain with, including inventive use of a flute and amusing bad-taste songs on a bizarre instrument called a stick dulcimer. A groundbreaking free show.

Web Design

I've been responsible for a few websites over the years, the ones currently up or in development are:

My personal website: www.owenniblock.com
Website and family site for Frank Honeybone: www.honeybone.net
Gallery site for Oliver Harris: www.ollieharris.com
Life coaching website: www.designsonlife.net
Nathan Caton's website: www.nathancaton.com

I'm looking for more web design work in 2008, so if you have anything you want doing let me know. I also offer hosting on my server, all of the above websites are currently on my server along with a number of other websites which I did not design.
